Vegas June 2009 (WSOP)

Day One
Last Updated: 2009-06-13 09:59:13
The drive out was one of the easiest we've ever had. No major construction projects along the way for the first time in a long time, at least none that had lane closures (they were repaving and putting up guardrails in the area of St George but apparently got the day off because there were no workers and the lanes were all open). That is until we got into the Vegas city limits, where they had 3-4 lanes down to two because it appears they are removing and replacing the entire roadway. So we would have made it in 11 hours without that. but it only cost us about 15 minutes...
We had an early dinner at the Mandalay Bay buffet, one of Joann's favorites because it's a little heavier than most on seafood. It's the only place we've seen that serves hot and cold crabs legs for example. Joann was quite happy, my meal was up and down ... the food was good, but some of it was not as warm as it should be. I have a new theory: Don't go to buffets when they are not crowded. This place was almost empty and I suspect that some of the food choices, many of which I picked of course, suffered from lack of turnover. Obviously nobody wants to wait in line to eat, but I think with a buffet you're going to get better food if what they're making is getting eaten and replaced fairly quickly.
Then we had lots of time to kill before the show. I had a couple of brief but positive sessions at craps tables. We found TVs everywhere with game seven of Pens/Wings so we stopped and watched here and there and saw the Pens hoist Lord Stanley's Cup. The last time we stopped to watch we were in the sports book and were very amused at the reactions to the Mets/Yankees game. I don't know how many of them had money on the baseball game and how many were just fans, but right around the same time the Pens were finishing off the Wings a brutal moment for the Amazin's. Two outs, bottom of the 9th inning, Mets ahead by a run and I believe the Yankees have the bases loaded. Easy fly ball to right field, Mets fans cheering ... and the outfielder drops the ball. One set of cheering stops, another starts, Mets fans quite angry .. it was funny if you weren't a Mets fan ...
Then on to Ka which Joann and I were both a little disappointed with. It was good but it wasn't great. Maybe we've seen too many Cirque shows. There were two incredibly impressive bits, but most of the others were frankly not all that impressive to us. And this show was a little heavier on dancing and production than on "acts", and personally I'm there for the acts. But we did had 2nd row, center seats which was kinda cool.
And that was pretty much our day. After the show we were both half asleep, Joann went straight to the room and went to bed, I walked to Venetian to buy into today's deep stack tournament and then back to the room and into bed myself.
Quick note on the change in plans. I've been telling everyone how great Caesar's poker room is and going on about my plan to play in their tournament. Well before we came out Cody informed me that attendance is so bad at the Caesar's tournament that they've effectively killed the Mega Stack tournament and replaced it with a daily $340 buyin. They're typically only getting 100 players a day. Compare that with 400-800 per day at Venetian, so it was an easy choice to make the switch as much as I like playing at Caesars.
So that's the plan for today. We're going to go over to Rio and buy in for the WSOP first, then have the buffet there around breakfast/lunch changeover and then get back to Venetian in time for the noon tournament. And hopefully our plans for tomorrow will include day two of that same tournament...
