Vegas June 2006

Day Six/Summary
The drive home was fairly uneventful. Rich apparently was up until 7am the night before, he asked me not to talk about it on the blog so I won't. And whatever you do, don't ask him about it, especially not in a crowd of people because he'd probably be pissed at me. Aside from that, saw a little dry lightning near the Utah/Arizona border and a forest fire near the Utah/Colorado border. Saw almost no police in spite of it being the start of a holiday weekend and signs at the borders threatening increased patrols and DUI checks.
So while not a financial success for me, it was a great trip. Got to see pros play poker (if you watch a lot of TV poker and don't play a lot of live poker you'd be stunned by the number of uncontested pre-flop raises and the rarity of even seeing a flop), found some casinos that had some very good tournament formats (and of course some bad), ate like a pig and got away from the kids for almost a week. And played A LOT of poker. We didn't see any shows, I still haven't gone up in the Eiffel Tower replica and I would have liked to spend a little more time at the craps table. None of those things will go away, however, between now and my next visit...whenever that is. As was the case in my last visit, cash games were kind to me (profitable all but one session) and tournaments were unkind.
Once again, thanks for reading. If you're going to Vegas yourself and plan to take in some tournaments go to the casinos first and check out the formats, they vary considerably from great to awful, and even in casinos will vary from tourney to tourney. Generally the more the buy-in the longer the rounds and the higher the starting chip count, but not always. I got excited when I saw Harrah's had a 75/150 round and 20 minute rounds with 3K starting chips, but that was tempered by the fact that they don't have a 400/800 round plus they had antes if you last that long (going from 300/600 to 500/1000) PLUS some tournaments only had 15 minute rounds. Do your research before you start playing!
