Vegas June 2015 (WSOP)

Planning
Last Updated: 2015-05-30 22:56:51
Well a few things have changed. We're heading out Saturday now instead of waiting until Sunday. It wouldn't be a summer WSOP trip if we didn't add a day to the already long trip a week or two before we left!
Right now the plan is to play in both WSOP events I talked about below. HORSE Wednesday, then Monster Stack on Friday or Saturday depending on how HORSE goes. I'm strongly considering playing in a "dealers choice" tournament on Tuesday at Planet Hollywood. That will partly depend on what kind of crowds they're getting for their tournament series. But you're allowed to pick from I think 8 games, which are basically the 8-game mix list (includes Razz, 2-7 triple draw, etc).
The rim-to-rim-to-rim hike went incredibly well, hopefully we'll be able to get in a little exercise on this trip.
And we're now not closing on the new house until mid-July, but that is an "official, written in stone" date.
We've moved our date night at Smith and Wollensky up to our arrival day Saturday but we're now leaning against seeing one of the shows. It'll probably a relatively early night before the poker marathon that will be the rest of the vacation.

Looks like the folks at the WSOP can take a hint. After the massive response to the Monster Stack tournament last year they finally figured out that they needed to increase starting stacks. It will now be 5 times buyin rather than 3 times buyin, at least up to the $5000 level. That makes all of the lower buyin tournaments a lot more attractive IMHO.
We're going first full week of June. Staying at Aria as usual for our summer trip. It's going to be another very busy summer for us! Two weekends before this trip I'm making my second attempt at hiking rim-to-rim-to-rim at the Grand Canyon and a month or so after this trip we have a family excursion planned. Oh, yeah, and we're going to buy and move into our new house in between the two vacations. That doesn't sound like a lot, does it?
As usual, the moment the WSOP schedule came out a month ago I got the itch. It's a little tempered by the hike since that's first, but June always feels like years away to me once I get that schedule and decide what I'm going to play in.
Not a lot of specific plans yet. Aside from poker I've made a dinner reservation at Smith and Wollensky, which is now an annual tradition for us. And we get a deal on one of a short list of Cirque Du Soliel shows so we're going to take advantage of that (leaning towards Zumanity, probably taking the kids to Zarkana next time we're there on a family trip).
On the poker side, the event I'm definitely playing in is Event 28 the Monster Stack. There are two "Day 1s", I've tentatively decided to play on the first one and get a day off in between. Not sure if that'll be a wise move or not. For now I think I'm better off playing in what will surely be the smaller crowd with fewer of the big pros. Those guys want to play in "everything" and a day off is usually a bad thing for them. OTOH if I do make day two I'm going to have an entire day to worry about it. Of course, I have to make day two for it to matter! And at least that part should be "old hat" for me (4 straight years!) so I shouldn't be a bundle of nerves any more.
I am also thinking about Event 24, HORSE, earlier in the trip. I really like mixed games, when I play online HORSE is probably 70-80% of the tournaments I play in and almost all of my "Day 2s" have been some form of a mixed game. But I'm not going to miss the monster stack, which will be late in the trip, and how "stuck" do I want to risk being when we get there?
So we'll see. Last several years I've also played at least one event a year at the Nugget downtown, but usually for non-hold'em and unfortunately their non-hold'em schedule doesn't appear to line up well with my other plans this year.
