Vegas June 2016 (WSOP Seniors, Solstice)

Got a tweet that the WSOP schedule was out around 12:30pm as I was finishing up my lunch...had our room at Aria booked by 1:30 and started this BLOG by 2:00. Already have a dinner reservation at Smith and Wollensky on our first day in town now too. Tho it's a month late, that's now our tradition for celebrating another year rather than going out on our anniversary.
We will be going to Vegas Friday June 17th (the day of the Senior Tournament I could play in but won't be) and staying through at least Day 2 of the Monster Stack tournament the following weekend. If I make a really deep run, we'll have to add a day or two...
UPDATE: Er...scratch that! A red-headed devil on my shoulder suggested that I should play in the seniors event. In a money-saving move, instead of just adding Thursday night at Aria I booked the first three nights at NYNY starting Thursday 6/16. We will switch to Aria on Sunday for the rest of the trip. NYNY really hooked us up for that weekend, we get a resort credit and they're waiving the resort fees in addition to significantly lower room rates! Add it all up and it's saving us about half the buyin for the seniors so in a sense I'm playing in it for half price!!! :-)
UPDATE #2: I will be heading back to Vegas in July to play in the tag team event with some friends.
UPDATE #3: I was only going to work half a day the Thursday we leave home so we could leave after lunch...but I didn't use another half a vacation day I expected to use back in early May, so then we were leaving first thing Thursday morning...then 12 days before the trip I called to see if rates had dropped and they had a hair so I saved a few bucks...and what's that? Wednesday night is cheap too? Now we leave Wednesday after work. Maybe this is why we need to start flying instead of driving, it's just too easy to alter the plans and we just can't help ourselves...if I hit the one-in-a-thousand or so shot and final table the monster Stack this is gonna be a two week trip...
The trip is built around the Monster Stack, but there is of course another tournament or two I might consider playing in if I find myself flush with cash after the first few days :-)
In the "reasonably low" buyin range there's a tournament with 90-minute levels as well as 2-7 Triple Draw that Monday; a PLO Wednesday; and on our theoretical last day in town (the trip can always be made longer if necessary...) there is a NLH/PLO mix tournament. What did my only WSOP cash come in? Well it was PLH/PLO but I'll call it "close enough". If the monster stack didn't go well and I was otherwise having a very good week, well, you never know.
The one thing I can say for sure is that there won't be a mixed tournament for me this year. Maybe one split in two games, but nothing 5 games or more as I would like. The low buyin HORSE and 8-game mix tournaments are all very early in the series and much as I enjoy the mixed tournaments the Monster Stack format is just too good to pass up.
I'm very happy about the changes they've made for this year. Paying top 15% instead of top 10% is a welcome change given the size of the fields and I was extremely happy to see that they finally realized they can take some money from the top end and spread it around a little more. My first instinct was that 15% sounded a little high...but I'll gladly take some cash if I make top 15%. I do continue to believe bottom money should at worst double your buyin and the sample payouts I saw (they took the millionaire maker and showed a chart last year's payouts vs what they would be this year) showed 1.5 X buyin bottom prize.
Having said that, tho, this is a great new payout structure and the folks at the WSOP should be commended for making this change. Their old payout structures were sooooo top heavy.
