Vegas June 2019 (WSOP)

Day 1 - Drive, "hitchiker"
Last Updated: 2019-06-06 12:53:10
Short entry, no poker, just getting into the writing groove but I do have a story!
It starts for me around 1PM even tho Joann and I weren't supposed to hit the road until around 3:30.
I glanced at Facebook and Dave, who I knew had left 5 in the morning in his big, brand new (less than 6 months old), fancy Ford Truck came up green in Messenger.
He shouldn't be green, he should be driving. Maybe he's having lunch? So I ask him that very question...
"Transmission let go. On the phone to get it towed."
"NO!!!" "Where are you?"
30 miles east of Salina. Off the top of my head it's about 750 miles from Denver area to Vegas and Salina UT is somewhere around the 450 mark. First place to get gas after a 100+ mile beautiful drive that has no services of any kind to distract you from the scenery. Cell phone coverage is spotty at best...
Summarizing Dave's FB post on it:
He broke down about 20 minutes before I messaged him. Driving along, transmission failed, see smoke in the rearview. Get to the shoulder, tranny fluid everywhere.
He barely had coverage but was able to call Ford roadside assistance. They're going to send someone.
An hour later, no truck. Call Ford back...there are no existing, open requests for a tow truck in the system according to the new person that answered the phone. Second person is going to send one.
Finally after a third phone call to check on the truck (it really is on the way this time) a truck shows up within 15 minutes.
Tow to Richfield, UT (about 20 miles closer to Vegas), they're not going to be able to look at it until the next day but it's pretty obvious it's not going to be a quick repair. Time to call Pete and Joann to see if we can pick him up on our way through.
Of course we can...
No offense, Alex (if you're reading), but it's a good thing for Dave you didn't take me up on a ride! Dave might still be in Richfield! :-)
Joann and I get out of town right around 3:40 as expected, make our usual stop at Starbucks at Avon (right around when Dave contacted me to ask for a ride), make our usual gas stops at Grand Junction, CO (give Dave first ETA) and Salina (we didn't see the "tranny fluid slick" around MM 82 but it was quite dark by then, let Dave know ETA improved by 30 mins) and then pay our first visit to the Ford dealership in Richfield!
I'll give the proprietor a lot of credit. 10:20 at night, clearly long closed, he was there with Dave to make sure he got off ok. Oh by the way, Dave met Ford guy's daughter when he walked to the local steak house for a bite to eat. Nothing like a little small town charm to help cheer Dave up a little!
On to In-N-Out around 12:30 and get to Vegas a little before 2am.
Dave is also staying at Aria so straight to the north valet.
They're out of king rooms, which we all want, so we all have been promised a room change some time after 11am. Joann will be handling the room change because...
My play for today is Limit Omaha 8/b here at Aria.
Wish me luck!
