Vegas June/July 2022 (WSOP)

Planning
Last Updated: 2022-06-20 12:03:31
The first big news is a first for our WSOP trip: Joann and I have cancelled our Aria reservation and are staying at Vdara instead!
As I'm typing this up we just got back from a long weekend staying there and were very happy both with the room and the convenience of the hotel. For about the same money we're going to have a bigger room with at least a sliding door between the bedroom and the living room area along with a kitchenette. Since Joann and I are often on different sleep schedules, having a place we can be if one of us is awake and not disturb the one sleeping is very helpful.
And a fridge we can actually use instead of just one that is for badly overpriced drinks and snacks they want to charge us for! For this past long weekend we got a free upgrade to an "executive corner suite", but we were able to peek at some regular rooms and liked what we saw.
We travel out there Wednesday the 22nd of June, I will be jumping into the WSOP immediately after we check in and go up to the room (Joann has even said dump everything in the room and go play!); Peter will be joining us for a few days the following week for his birthday but more as a reward for helping us with things this year; Joann heads home on the 6th and I'm planning to be there at least til the end of the following weekend.
As far as poker...
Aria FINALLY released their schedule! And it, in a word, SUCKS. Over a month and a half there are 4 PLO tournaments, 1 HORSE tournament ... and other than that, nothing but NLH. No planned 7pm tournaments, just 11 am almost every day (10 for seniors, which they crammed 2 of those together just 5 days apart).
8-9 days late with the schedule and all they could come up with is "we're going to have a NLH tournament almost every day at 11"??? Awful.
Orleans schedule is a lot better (for me) but not awesome. They don't have any "big" non-hold'em events and only their NLH tournaments have guarantees, which is a shame. Last October they were failing to make the guarantees for "not NLH" so I'm not even a little surprised. But that said, most days they have something that isn't hold'em in the afternoon. Not that I'm going to avoid NLH entirely, I just don't want to play it every day.
I've gone through all the schedules and I've created a table of all of the stuff I'd consider playing in. Stuff that's in bold is stuff I plan to play in, but after literally the first event on the first day nothing is in stone. I didn't bold anything after the satellite into the Main aside from 8/b mix because I'm holding the optimistic view that I'll get in and make it to at least Day 2 and don't really want to plan beyond that - except that if I'm not playing in Day 2 of the Main I will 100% be playing in the 8/b mix on 7/7. How can I not after my result in October?

=================FIRST UPDATE===================
The WSOP schedule is out and we have a plan!
I'm still waiting on Aria and Orleans to put out their summer series schedule. Aria has only announced that there will be one with start and end dates but no day-by-day yet. They said 5 days ago it would be out "shortly". I just assume Orleans will do one as well but they have nothing on their twitter feed yet, they are in the middle of their spring tournament series.
That said, it's as tho I wrote the WSOP schedule myself!
8-Game mix, which I couldn't play in last October because I was too busy taking 30th place in 8/b Mix is scheduled on the day we're heading out there! And the 8/b mix is moved from early in the schedule to the day that we had planned on Joann flying home without me if there was anything I'd want to play in that went into the following weekend (I would have drove home with her if there wasn't anything for me). And they moved the Seniors tournament to the weekend after Father's Day instead of Father's Day weekend for the first time I can remember, right into our dates! Can't make it up!
Here's our schedule as it currently sits, this will be updated as we get more information:
  • Wednesday June 22 drive out early in the morning, play Event 48 8-Game Mix
  • Thursday June 23 Day 2 of 8-Game mix OR Event 47B, Day 1B of Seniors event (almost certainly late reg unless 8-Game goes horribly)
  • Friday June 24 There is a higher buyin Event 52 9-Game mix that includes NL 2-7 single draw. I would only do this if I final tabled 8-game but busted while registration is still open
  • Monday June 27 Event 58 Pot Limit Omaha 8/B
  • Saturday July 2 or Sunday July 3 satellite into the Main Event
  • Sunday July 3 or Monday July 4 Event 70A/70B Main Event Day 1A/1B if I won the satellite
  • Wednesday July 6 Joann flies home a day earlier than originally planned (definitely day off for me)
  • Thursday July 7 check out of Aria, check myself into Park MGM and then either Day 2AB of the Main or Event 72 Omaha 8/B Mix
====================original post================
I've booked a day short of a month in mid-June to mid-July 2022 on the assumption that the WSOP will go back to their normal schedule. Usually we would prefer early June, however we are 99% going to Italy in late May and have to leave a reasonable amount of time between trips. Joann's niece is getting married in the middle of June so we're planning around that as well (much as I'd like to have played in the seniors which almost certainly will go back to Father's Day weekend, the weekend of the wedding).
Joann and I will travel out together in late June. I am assuming that the Main Event will go back to a 4th of July weekend start since the 4th happens to be a Monday.
The notional plan is that I will look over the schedule whenever it comes out, plan on 2-3 bracelet events and plan to try to satellite into the ME. They now schedule several bracelet events during the ME, and the last couple of WSOPs there have definitely been some I would have liked to have played in.
If I don't make the ME, then either Joann and I will return the Thursday after it starts or, if there's something I badly want to play in later that week that would spill into the following weekend I will put Joann on a plane, change hotels for something cheaper and stay through the weekend before driving home myself Sunday or Monday.
If I make it into the ME, then I'm keeping the entire reservation and risk having to eat some of the hotel costs because I would probably leave a day or two after busting. By the time I have to cancel part or all of the second reservation I should have already played in Day 1 and know if I've made Day 2. I would definitely opt for 1A over others so I'd have a few days until Day 2A to figure things out and make decisions.
