Day 14 - Triple Draw Mix at Orleans
Last Updated: 2023-06-21 13:42:01
With the 4pm start at Orleans Joann and I decided to spend a longer morning at the pool and have lunch under an umbrella.
On to Orleans for Triple Draw Mix.
And much to the disappointment of everyone at my table at least, Badugi was not in the mix! Just 2-7 Triple Draw and A-5 Triple Draw.
Never played A-5 before, but it didn't take long to figure out the hand standards. Unlike 2-7 straights and flushes don't count against you and aces are low. A2345 is the nuts. A 6-low is almost always going to win, a 7-low can be worth value betting at the end. An 8-low is "check it down" territory.
First pot I won of any size was about 45 minutes in. I was dealt a pat 7 in A-5 and got through two draws four-handed. Huge pot relative to the blinds at the time.
About 10 minutes later I'm dealt 2-3-4-5-X in 2-7 so I'm drawing one to the nuts. Raise, reraise, 4-bet before the first draw. We both draw one, he leads out, I call, both missed and draw one again.
I spike a 7! I check-raise him, he calls and draws one. We cap the betting on the river, he rivered the nuts and we chop it up. Argh!
Then an "I don't know what I was thinking" moment. I miss twice drawing with A245 in A-5 and have to give up on the end. Then I inexplicably decide to play 5-6-7 all clubs in 2-7 and spike the 4c. This is one of the worst draws I could possibly play ... but I call one more bet and draw another card and pair up. Checks around, I get a free draw and catch the ace of spades ... at least it wasn't a straight flush ... checks around, ace is good! They both paired up (2s and 3s).
Just before the break I missed that the game change and check-called at the end with 2-3-5-6-7 because I thought we were playing A-5. What I actually have is the third nuts in 2-7, I definitely missed a bet there. Argh!
But still 32,600 at the break from a 20k starting stack. Sweet!
About 15 minutes into the next level after break I get dealt AA223 in A-5. Very good starting hand, not only am I drawing to the nuts but I've eliminated two cards people want! Hand was only heads-up, I spike a 4 and a 5 on the first draw for the nuts and bet and get called on every street.
Half hour later I catch the third nuts again in A-5, A2356, but don't get paid on the river. Still, tho, stack building!
Then just before the next break I get lucky. A guy wants to get all in, is patting and betting every street. I'm playing a not very good 4567 3-handed in 2-7. If the betting wasn't likely going to be capped by the size of this guys stack I probably would have folded.
On the second draw I spike a 9. I've seen this guy pat 9s and 10s all the way down and decide to just pat the third draw. The third person in the hand is drawing one the whole time. We check down, all-in shows a 9-8, 3rd guy shows 2345 drawing to the nuts the whole time ... and caught an ace.
Ship it!
47k at the break, more than double a starting stack.
72 players paying 9 places and I'm in great shape!
But ... it all went to hell after that.
I missed literally every draw the rest of the time I was there. I don't think I dragged another pot. Actually, exactly one pot. At some point I caught a pat 9 on the second draw, checked down and won one small pot. That was it.
Back to back hands I had three chance drawing one card to a winner and got nothing out of it, both times the winning hand was not as good as what I was drawing to.
Finally I'm down around 7500 chips and get all in drawing to the second nuts in 2-7 3-handed. I have 2367, I'm all in by the second draw and I spike a 5 on the final draw! 3rd nuts!
And run into the actual nuts. Out.
Sandwich for dinner, that was my night.
I'm taking Wednesday off, going to play NLH at Aria Thursday and Friday and then we're finally heading home Saturday. I've decided not to play in the WSOP Seniors lottery, although you never know if I have some huge cash on Thursday :-).
