Vegas June 2025 (WSOP Part 1)

Day 3 - NLH at MGM Grand
Last Updated: 2025-06-19 16:01:03
Tough turnaround being up until 2am Tuesday and planning on a 10am on Wednesday, but it's what I do...
After busting out Tuesday night I did walk down to NYNY for some beer and slices of pizza, then started typing up that BLOG sipping whisky. I was in an odd state of being half ready for bed and half wired from the adrenaline, and the couple of beers didn't calm me down as much as they usually would.
Grabbed just a tea from Starbucks in the morning while I finished up in the room thinking I'd grab a bite on the way to the tournament, but ended up spending more time in the room than I thought I would and was running a little later than I wanted. So on to MGM Grand with just another tea in hand.
I also had looked at the tournament format and it said 20 minute levels to start, but I must have been looking at the wrong format because they were doing 30 minute levels. So an hour and 15 minutes late I only missed two and a half levels. I was happy about that...
I was completely card dead through the rest of level three and most of level four. People at the table had to think I was the tightest guy on the planet but the reality was I had absolutely no cards.
A little before level four was ending I finally picked up A-K suited in the small blind and got raised into. I decided to just call and see a flop out of position.
I check-called their continuation bet on an all small card flop, blank turn checked around and he folded to my lead on the river king.
It was something!
Then last hand before break I pick up aces and got raised into. They made it 1200 to go at 200/400/400 and I popped it to 2800. He called, I got no more action. 28,900 at the break after starting with 25k.
After the break I had two great levels and built my stack up to 55k, more than double a starting stack.
The first big hand was actually a chop. There were three limpers at 300/500/500 and I made it 3k to go with A-Q offsuit. Everyone (to my surprise) called the big bet although the blinds folded.
Flop came A high with two hearts. Checked to me and I led out for 6500. One caller.
Turn is a third heart and he immediately goes all-in.
Literally my favorite tell. There is no doubt in my mind this guy doesn't have a flush, but I am risking my tournament life. Usually I would snap call, but I did spend some time pondering whether I really wanted to risk busting.
But ... at the end of the day I know he's full of crap. If he really had a flush he'd give me a chance to put chips in on my own. I have never, ever been wrong calling down a snap all-in. They're always someone trying to buy the pot.
I call, and he rolls over A-Q of spades and we chop the pot. He was stronger than I thought he would be, I really expected the pot to get pushed my way but with the dead money we both chipped up a little from it.
Not only did he give me the reliable tell, but he did it with no heart in his hand to make it less likely I had a heart. He's lucky I wasn't freerolling him!
Very next hand I pick up aces again, and since I'm first in I make it 1500 to go and get two callers.
Flop came 2-K-2, exactly the kind of flop I'm hoping for in this spot. Surely someone has a king they think is going to be good, right?
I lead out I think for 3500 and sure enough next to act immediately goes all in. Other guy folds, I toss in one chip to make the "I know I'm ahead" call and sure enough the other guy rolls over K-Q off. Board runs out clean and I'm at the time over 41k.
Won pots here an there to get to the 55k I mentioned before, no particularly notable hands just ABC poker.
But, then, stuff goes to hell. Lose a flip with a short stack with TT vs his AQ, flop an ace, and then nothing worked out for me for a while. I drop down to 23k.
Then a crazy hand!
All in against the same guy I lost the flip to, this time him with TT and me with AK. Definitely some karma at work when the flop came A-X-K.
Ten on the turn. Fuck.
Ace on the river!!! Ship it!
So I double up, but again nothing works out for a little while and eventually I raise out with K-J off, flop top two pair, I bet and he calls, turn a blank, I bet again and now more than half my stack is in the pot, river is a 9 and all the chips go in and he rolls over Q-T for a rivered straight.
I pretty much felt he was going to show me that hand, but with more than half my chips already in I was not going away with top two. Is what it is.
Decided to call it a day as far as poker and just wait for Joann to show up. Late lunch at Javier's and then back up to the room to watch streaming, hydrate a little and then sip whisky while I wait.
I am taking Thursday off of poker to spend with Joann. She is, after all, flying out here to relax and spend some time with me so a day off is the least I can do. As such I doubt I will do a BLOG for Thursday.
Friday I will finally play in the Triple Draw Mix I expected to play in on Tuesday after lunch with Joann, then Saturday Joann leaves and I finally take my shot at a bracelet in the 9-Game Mix.
