Council Bluffs 02/2009 (WSOP Circuit)

Day Two - HORSE
Last Updated: 2009-02-17 18:30:31
HORSE started out very well for me. In the first round of Hold'em I caught aces and got paid, then on the first two hands of Omaha 8/b I scooped consecutive pots with a nut flush/nut low and a flopped boat with no low coming, getting called on every street in both. So 10 hands into the tournament I went from 4000 to 6500. Won a pot here and there in the next two rounds of Razz and Stud and I had increased my chip stack through each of the four games.
But then in stud 8/b my first mistake of the trip.
I hit two pair Ks up and I had two people in the hand. I started betting, when we got to 6th street tho someone hit trip 7s. He bet of course, and since it was limit and I hadn't seen another K or 4 I figured I was getting the right odds to try to hit my boat. Unfortunately I missed that the third person in the hand, acting after me, had an obvious made low and she made it two bets and now I had to call another bet. I should have realized that second bet was coming and saved the 600 chips. In case you didn't figure it out, my K or 4 didn't come. Dumb.
But no problem, I'm still close to 5K in chips.
Then I was card dead for a while and trickled my way down close to the 4K starting stack. Back to Stud, twice I hit 2 pair on 4th or 5th street and both times someone drew out flushes on me. Ugh. Down to 2500 and now I'm going to have to grind it out again...
Got trickled down some more, down to about 2000. Playing stud 8/b I start with A-4-7 and all high cards for everyone else. OK, good time to draw to a low and at least get half a pot and who knows maybe I'll hit another ace. Get my 4th low card and my 3rd club on 4th street, check around. Catch another club on 5th street, bet from Ks, call call. 6th street a blank, pair of Kings bets again, I can't go away, I call. River missed my low but hits my flush! No lows out there! Jackpot!
Except for the quad kings on the river.
That left me with like 600 chips, and I basically get the same hand on the next hand, three low cards with an ace. I raise, two callers. Get my 4th low on 4th street, push what little I have left in, two callers. Ace on 5th street...but of course the low never comes and someone hit runner runner boat to crack my aces that were good at the time.
Damn that was brutal.
I'll say this, the level of play was considerably better than I expected. Maybe it was just my table but it wasn't the group of bad players I was expecting after Omaha 8/b last night. This was a solid table and the people who drew out on me played good draws that worked out for them, and after an early rush my good hands just wouldn't hold up for me.
Oh well. Not exactly the storybook ending I'd hoped for but that's poker, folks. Now I just have to get ready for the WSOP in June.
